Carpet Installer

Carpet Installation, The Hard Way

You have made the decision on getting carpet and the color that will match the room perfectly. Now you are thinking about the installation. You can install the carpet yourself or have it installed by a professional.
If you decide to install the carpet on your own, you will need to purchase the following supplies: Tack less carpet strips, stapler, hammer, Utility knife, chalk line, measuring tape, rolling pin, work gloves, safety glasses, seam tape, and Knee pads.

You will also need to rent the following supplies: Knee kicker, power stretcher, seam cutter, seam roller, strip cutter, wall trimmer, and seam iron. It may be cheaper to rent the seam roller and knee kicker, if you want to save money.

You will need to move all of the furniture out of the room that you are installing the carpet in. Then you will need to start on tearing up the old flooring or carpet and pad. You want to get down to the sub-floor so that you can install the tack less carpet strips. All the debris and dirt needs to be cleaned up. The floor molding needs to be removed, as well as any door trim that may be in the room. The door will need to be taken off of the entrance to (if there is one in the room). If there are old carpet strips on the floor they also will need to be removed.

Walk around on the sub-floor, this will allow you to check for any squeaks. If you hear a squeak, use a 1½" galvanized screw to fasten the sub-floor to the joist closest to the squeak.

New carpet tack less strips are ready to be installed around the outer walls of the room. The tacks less strips have 2-3 rows of very sharp tacks that secure the strip to the floor. Leave ½" between the walls and where you are installing the tack less strips. When you get to a corner, make sure that the 2 adjoining strips come together in the corner.

Installing the carpet pad can be pretty tricky, especially if the room is wider than the carpet pad. You will need to lay the padding out on the floor so that it is 2 inches over the tack less strip. This will allow for a perfect fitting of the carpet pad against the inside of the tack less strip.

If you need to extra carpet pad is needed, make sure that one carpet pad is 6 inches over the other carpet pad. This will allow you to trim the 2 carpet pads for an exact fit; then duct tape the 2 seams together making a perfect seam.

Roll the new carpet out onto the floor so that it over laps the edge of the room by 5" or so. Make sure that the carpet extends past each wall by a few inches. Mark the carpeting so that when it gets trimmed it will fit tightly against the wall. Put a piece of scrap carpet or thick cardboard under where you make the cuts in the rug to protect the carpet pad.

If you need to add carpet onto the original section of carpet, make sure that the design is going the same way as the original carpet. The overlap should be about 5 inches; you will need to use the rented carpet seam cutter to cut them. Once this is done, center a piece of seaming tape on the floor underneath where they will join with the bonding agent on top. With an iron, warm the top of the tape up (NOT THE CARPET), and tightly join the two edges together. While joining the seams together, seal the seam with a carpet roller or rolling pin.

Take the knee kicker to tack the edges of the carpet down. Make sure that you have the knee kicker 3" away from the wall when you start. You will need to start at one side of the room with the kicker, while following right behind with and use the carpet stretcher to finish attaching the carpet to the tack strips. After you have completed this process all the way around the room, it is time to trim the carpet again. Make sure that you get as close to the wall as possible when you trim this time, as all that is left is re- installing the mop boards.

Now you can sit back and look at your work. Wow it was a job!! But, Wow it sure looks nice. Now your back, knees, neck, and arms are really painful. If you would have hired a professional carpet installer for $39.95; you could have had all of this work done, and not been sore all over. Now you need to move the furniture into the room, or this would also have been done by the professionals.
